This monograph provides the first comprehensive reappraisal of the work of the Tyrolean artist Franz Krautgasser (1920–1985). It is based on the ongoing cataloguing and digitisation of his estate, undertaken since 2024, which has brought to light a multifaceted oeuvre spanning painting, graphic art, and experimental material techniques.

The publication situates Krautgasser’s artistic development within the context of Austrian and international post-war modernism, while also examining his position within the Tyrolean art scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Particular attention is paid to his exceptional spirit of experimentation, evident both in his use of ink, oil, tempera, watercolour, and lacquer paints and in his application of various printmaking and mixed-media techniques.

With contributions by Matthias Boeckl, Günther Dankl, and Lena Ganahl, as well as an extensive catalogue section organised by technique, the publication establishes a new foundation for the art-historical study of Franz Krautgasser’s work.
