Flora Klein’s abstract paintings are vivid and multi-layered. She proceeds according to distinct criteria, guided by her interest in the structuring of pictorial space and the relationship between color, movement, and surface. Her oeuvre can be divided into constantly evolving phases, each of which is characterized by particular formal and painterly gestures. Klein's practice emerges from a tension between resolute focus and openness, between intuitive action and self-critical observation. These supposed opposites generate the driving force behind her serial works and shape her distinctive style.

This catalogue is being published in connection with the exhibition "Heat" (July 9–November 19, 2023) at Kunsthaus Glarus. For this show, individual works were culled from different phases of Klein’s oeuvre (2013–2023) and shown together in new constellations for the first time. The publication takes a chronological approach, presenting the different work phases in separate chapters. The essays by Inka Meißner, Melanie Ohnemus, and Kristian Vistrup Madsen offer insights into Klein’s practice, analyze aspects of her oeuvre in different contexts, and discuss contemporary abstract painting.
