The Künstlerhaus presents Linda Christanell, a pioneer of the feminist avant-garde. This solo exhibition is the largest presentation of her work to date. In the mid-1960s, Christanell created drawings and paintings that explored Art Informel, Pop Art, the deconstruction of forms, and symbolic abstraction. Towards the end of the decade, she began experimenting with plexiglass, textiles, and foam, sometimes incorporating her own body into her work. From 1976 to 1978, she worked with Renate Bertlmann as the BC-Kollektiv. Together with Karin Mack and Margot Pilz, she created the monumental photographic series Wir über uns (1978–1981). Photography and film increasingly became central to her artistic practice. Through these media, she explored the limits of representation and raised questions about the body, the gaze, identity, and visibility. For the first time, the retrospective Linda Christanell. Die Gaben der Göttin [The Gifts of the Goddess] examines her entire early body of work through to her films and presents largely unknown film material restored in collaboration with the Austrian Film Museum. Placing her work in dialogue with pieces by her contemporaries and younger generations of women artists, the exhibition reveals the enduring relevance of her artistic practice.
