This book is not an examination of overt activism. Instead, it traces the quiet urgencies and everyday negotiations of actors engaged in critical spatial practices across China. These are not stories of revolution in the conventional sense, but of persistence: of passionate, values-driven individuals committed to creating more liveable and inclusive urban futures, often working against the grain of top-down systems.

Through interviews, personal reflections, and in-depth case studies, this edited volume explores the everyday challenges faced by architects, artists, designers, researchers, and community organisers. Their work is not simply about delivering projects; it is about nurturing social bonds, preserving memories, and creating platforms for collective action. It is about redefining urban making—not solely through plans and profit, but through informal, affective, and collective forms of organisation from the ground up.

With contributions by Meiqin Wang, Zoénie Liwen Deng, Yanki Lee, Jingyuan Huang, Yuan Zheng, Jenny Chou, Qiuling Wu, Yunting Zhang, Yi Xu, Eddie Ma, Clare Lewis, and Brigitte Felderer.
