Executed in acrylic paint his cool, seductively flawless and smooth tightly-laced extremities still come across as symbols of repression: “My aim is to demonstrate the lack of freedom and constraints in our bureaucratic, technocratic society, and counteract the cultivation of a capitalist consciousness. (...) I attempt to precisely render found items such as bandages, corsets, belts, oxygen masks, life jackets – utensils intended to deal with human incompetence, to heighten their reality through association and alienate their original function.” (1971) Voth’s visual metaphors straddle consumer aesthetics and fetishes, astonishing us both with their artistic and social relevance.
The catalog is being published to mark the presentation of the Collection in Neues Museum – Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design Nürnberg.
