Three years, 36 locations, 38 projects, 121 participating artists

Volume 13 of the series documenting the work of Public Art Lower Austria (KOERNOE) includes every project and event that was realized in all of Lower Austria with the support of the Department of Culture of the State of Lower Austria between 2017 and 2019. The artistic field of public art is characterized by an abundance of functions and opportunities and is unique in its interaction with the different aspects and special qualities of the public realm. The works realized by Austrian and international artists range from permanent designs for public squares, the active engagement with the culture of remembrance, and walk-in installations, to participatory, performative, and ephemeral projects. The function intended for each artwork had its own particular challenges, and the artists found specific solutions that were often equally cautious and bold in the form of works commemorating the victims of the Nazi regime, works in which the public could participate in remembering volunteer fire departments that no longer exist, works giving a voice to women’s rights, or works creating places of conversation, reflection, and community in social institutions. The meticulous graphic design of this clothbound book was created by the sensomatic graphic design studio. With its practical size and maps, it is also a great source of inspiration for taking a daytrip to visit public art.
