Katrin Plavčak’s canvases portray the “surreal realities” that emerge amid our turbulent times including geopolitical crises, increasing digital surveillance, and the banalities of everyday life. Painting Reality in Surreal Times is published alongside the same-titled exhibition at the Lentos Kunstmuseum (September 17, 2026 – January 10, 2027). The catalogue provides a new overview of Plavčak’s outstanding oeuvre, including images of new works, which have not yet been published in a catalogue. Strongly emphasized is the art historic context in which Plavčak’s works can be read: Danica Đorđević Janković reviews Plavčaks works within the concept of “liminality” and with a focus on naïve art, Bart Verschaffel positions the artist within tendences of surrealist art. A conversation between Gabriele Mackert and Plavčak puts forth surprising insights into the artist’s differentiated, facetted and humorous approach and working process. Painting Reality in Surreal Times is a global reflection on the “surrealities” of our times – and therefore highly topical also outside of the museal context.
