Iran is a continuous topic for global politics and the conflict-ridden Middle East, not only in the recent development: 40 years of Islamic Republic, nuclear treaty, oil, sanctions, repression against civil rights fighters, peace process, etc.
In “Facing Iran”, over a period of many years, the artist as documentarist engages in the frictions with the so-called Western world and with modernity, but also in the finer facets and interstices of the country. Kandl visited and portrayed Iran in three trips in 2003, 2006 and 2012 and makes them tangible in this publication between diary and reportage.
