This »sediment« double issue introduces the impressive history of the Galerie Friedrich, which within the shortest time became one of the leading avant-garde galleries in the western world. Günter Herzog examines the developments in four distinct periods in Munich, Cologne and New York between 1963 and 1980. Brigitte Jacobs van Renswou talked with Six Friedrich, Fred Jahn, Sabine Knust and Thordis Moeller, who describe their work for and with the gallery and have the highest regard for Heiner Friedrich’s extraordinary life work. Charlotte Neußer and Miriam Heimig’s chronology documents all the exhibitions at the three venues and in this form represents a first reckoning. As is usual with the »sediment« series, extensive picture material offers an insight into the gallery’s work with Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Georg Baselitz, Robert Rauschenberg, Palermo, Sigmar Polke, Sol LeWitt, Walter De Maria and many, many other artists who have become world-famous.
