Public Art
Lower Austria
Volume 15
Three years, numerous projects, new perspectives, and meaningful encounters.
The 15th volume of the KOERNOE documentation series presents the projects, initiatives, and discourses realized in public spaces throughout Lower Austria between 2023 and 2025. Offering a comprehensive overview of current developments in public art, the publication highlights its social, cultural, and political relevance in an ever-changing society.
At the heart of this volume lies the question of participation: How can diverse communities become more actively involved in artistic processes? What new forms of exchange emerge when artists, municipalities, institutions, young people, and local stakeholders collaboratively shape public space? A wide range of projects demonstrates how art can serve as a catalyst for dialogue, encounter, and collective action.
Special attention is given to innovative mediation and outreach programs. Initiatives such as Stadt – Raum – Welt – What? open up new approaches to public art for young people, empowering them to become active contributors to their own environments. The volume also presents pioneering models of participation, including the involvement of children in artist selection processes for public art commissions developed in collaboration with the KinderKunstLabor.
In addition, the book addresses the challenges of preserving, documenting, and maintaining artworks in public space. Essays, project reports, and photographic documentation provide insight into the complexity of artistic production and the diverse processes behind each work.
Volume 15 demonstrates how art in public space responds to contemporary social developments, fosters new forms of dialogue, and creates opportunities for unexpected experiences and encounters. Richly illustrated and complemented by in-depth background information, the publication invites readers to discover the many artistic destinations and cultural landscapes of Lower Austria from a fresh perspective.
