Architecture thinks in terms of relations and communicates in terms of scale. Yet their full impact only unfolds within the built environment.
The 1:1 projects by ./studio3, the Institute for Experimental Architecture at the University of Innsbruck, initiate collective processes and make tangible the full responsibility of architectural action from conception to planning to realisation. When projects are built during the course of study, learning happens at the scale of reality. Architecture becomes publicly visible, spatially and aesthetically effective, and responds to cultural, social and political conditions.
25 projects in 25 years form the occasion for this publication on the design-build research and teaching of ./studio3. The works reflect the diversity of their sites, their users, and the students who helped to shape them, and they are an expression of the experimental aspiration to actively intervene in cultural contexts.
A non-hierarchical glossary featuring texts by 14 authors, comprising anecdotes, practical advice and theoretical reflections, alongside a documentation of the projects, tells of an architecture that emerges from thinking, acting, and friendship.
